Year 5 Gifted & Talented Academy

The academy will offer a range of sport activities to help children develop their physical, social, cognitive, creative and personal skills, supported by specialist coaches. The academies will take place monthly from December 2023, presenting a fantastic opportunity for your most gifted pupils to experience sport at an elite level and raise their aspirations.

As a Hull Active Schools primary member school, part of the service you will receive during the 2023/34 academic year will be opportunities for your pupils to access the Year 5 Gifted & Talented Academy. The aims of this targetted programme are as follows:

  • Provide a platform for young people to access a variety of high quality community sports clubs from across the City of Hull.

  • Improve the skills of gifted and talented pupils across a range of sports and support them to discover a passion they may not have tried before.

  • Foster new social connections by meeting new people and supporting their personal development.

  • Raise aspirations of gifted and talented pupils by building a picture of elite sport and opportunities available to them.

  • Bridge the gap between primary and secondary PE.

Did you know?

88% of top athletes played multiple sports in their development years and did not solely focus on the one sport they eventually excelled at in adulthood. It has also been found fewer sport injuries occur in young people who play a wide variety of sports growing up and accessing multiple sports reduces the risks of stress, anxiety and burnout leading to young people leaving a sport they solely focus on at an early age.

Using the criteria below, please can your school identify a maximum of 5 x Yr5 pupils who are either gifted in physical education or talented in sport. Once identified, please distribute the attached booklet to pupils to take home to their parents/carers. Within the booklets is key information on our ‘expression of interest’ checklist and consent process. Both forms need to be completed and submitted to Hull Active Schools CIC no later than Friday 27th October 2023. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Unlike all other Hull Active Schools sport competitions, events and festivals we provide during the academic year, there is no stipulation that a member of school staff must attend the Gifted & Talented academy sessions. Therefore, it is essential we obtain direct consent from parents/carers.
