Psychological Domain
The attitudes and emotions a young person has towards movement and physical activity.
Confidence and Self-Belief
Develop confidence and self-belief through age and ability graded competitions or festival experiences where students can compete in a safe and controlled environment. Spirit of the games value scoring also provides all young people with the opportunity to be rewarded, regardless of physical ability.
Connection to place
Through participating in citywide and locally based competitions and festivals, students are connected to their locality and city. Local partners provide exit routes into community sport giving children a chance to connect. Our inclusive sport program provides lower ability students with the chance to represent their school and take pride in that experience.
Self-Perception
We don’t just cater for players. Hull Active Schools has a strong ethos and mission to develop an awareness of students own ability to participate in sport and understand the variety of roles on offer to them. Students have a broad and varied offer to participate in and have the opportunity to undertake a variety of roles within school and beyond e.g. leadership, officiating and coaching roles. Within a sports team, young people will begin to understand the most effective way that they can create the biggest impact for the overall team objective.
Determination and Perseverance
In a variety of contexts, sport and physical activity will help instill and enhance determination and perseverance in young people. Determination shown to complete a cross country race or to demonstrate perseverance to succeed and continue in testing game situations or when behind in a league table.
Engagement and Enjoyment
Opportunity to engage and enjoy a variety of physical activity and competitive school sport opportunities which will provide a love of physical activity for life. A range of community exit routes are available for students to transition into local sport and physical activity opportunities to further increase lifelong participation.
Self-Regulation
Whilst participating in ability graded competitions and festivals students are presented with scenarios where decisions sometimes go against them. They are encouraged to self-regulate and show emotional control in dealing with setbacks. Self-regulation extends to the physical domain when considering various systems of the body i.e. in long distance running young people will be introduced to ‘pacing’ which they self-regulate their own cardiovascular system. In hot conditions in the Summer, students have to regulate their water intake to prevent dehydration.
Motivation
Our events and competitions always give the opportunity to develop motivation to succeed in situations which provide appropriate stretch and challenge e.g. the use of ability graded competitions and power-play rules. We are committed to providing positive learning experiences and outcomes for ALL young people, as opposed to purely concentrating on the winners.
Resilience
Hull Active Schools develop resilience in a variety of contexts and activities. Promoting the mindset to keep playing with desire even though you are likely to lose a game of netball or rugby. Teaching young people to accept the fact they will not win at all times and guide them through this process, creating more resilient learners.
